POSTER SERIES

This project entails the creation of a diverse poster series catering to different target audiences, ranging from Craiglist advertisements to gig posters and the promotion of ZooTunes. Each poster presents its own unique challenge, whether it's designing captivating visuals for a Craiglist ad while considering a classmate's preferences, crafting gig posters that align with the artist's style, or creating dynamic advertising for ZooTunes that captures the lively nature of the concert series.

The Case Study

The Problem

A series of posters based on adhering to a a variety of target audiences.

Craiglist: I'm faced with the challenge of designing a visually captivating poster including text from a random Craiglist ad. Additionally, the poster needs to have an efficient composition reflective of the unique preferences of a specific classmate.

Gig Poster: In this case, the challenge is to craft a gig poster that would adhere to the artist’s style and sell at a live performance. The poster also needs reflect the preferences of a particular classmate who determines the artist I design for: Ed Sheeran.

ZooTunes: ZooTunes needs advertising that authentically captures and amplifies its vibrant and dynamic essence. It should engage its audience with a sense of excitement and joy reflective of the unique experience offered during the series of concerts.

Research

Craiglist Ad: After reviewing the questionnaire completed by my classmate Ed, I looked into various posters and advertisements to draw inspiration. My randomly assigned ad was about junk removal and I was not quite sure how to make this appeal to my classmate. However, Ed's preference for Helvetica and white text on black backgrounds guided my exploration. To capture his taste and align with the ad's content, I created two moodboards: one reflecting his aesthetic preferences and another inspired by the details of the Craiglist ad. After reviewing initial sketches, I recognized the importance of simplicity and a focus on typography in order to appeal to my audience, Ed.

Gig Poster: Upon reading the questionnaire responses from my classmate AJ, I immersed myself in Ed Sheeran's music in order to understand its appeal and themes. As I listened, I wrote my thoughts, generating insights to inform the moodboards. By gaining insight into Ed Sheeran's music and fanbase, I developed multiple moodboards demonstrating different aspects of my research. Inspired by AJ's favorite song, 'Photograph', I opted to design the poster in the style of a polaroid photograph, creating a sense of bittersweet nostalgia like the song.

ZooTunes: To immerse myself in the essence of ZooTunes concerts, I watched recordings of previous performances, jotting down my thoughts and impressions. Subsequently, I analyzed the current advertising materials of ZooTunes to identify opportunities for my poster to complement and build upon the existing promotional materials. Given the distinct combination of music and animals at ZooTunes, I decided to create a fun illustration that literally combined both of these elements.

Process Overview

Craiglist Ad: With a tight deadline of two weeks, the process for creating this poster was straightforward. After conducting necessary research for my classmate and the Craiglist ad content, I generated 10 sketches and finalized the poster within the following week.

Gig Poster: Similarly constrained to deadline of two weeks, the initial week was devoted to research and sketching, followed by the presentation of the poster. Subsequently, I invested an additional two weeks refining the poster based on the feedback received during the final presentation.

ZooTunes: This assignment spanned four weeks in total. The first week involved research and sketching, followed by demonstrating my first draft the next week. Significant changes were made after receiving feedback, leading to a departure from realism and an exploration of vibrant colors inspired by Lisa Frank. After an additional and less drastic revision, the final version of the poster was presented.

The Solution

To tackle the diverse requirements across the poster series, I conducted thorough research on each target audience to ensure that the design resonates with their preferences and effectively communicates the intended message. For the Craiglist poster, I integrated the text from the ad into a layout Ed found visually compelling. I crafted a gig poster that reflected Ed Sheeran’s style while also appealing to my classmate AJ. For ZooTunes, I focused on capturing the vibrant and dynamic essence of the event, utilizing illustration to evoke a sense of excitement.
